February 2017

Dear OSU and OSU Foundation Colleagues,

I know this is a busy time of year for everyone and I appreciate all of your great contributions to rallying resources and support for Oregon State. We ended January with $58.36M in gifts to OSU programs, students and research. We continue towards our fundraising goal of $103M for the fiscal year ending June 30th, and our stretch goal of $126M.

Student Success

I hope you all plan to join us next Wednesday for President Ray’s State of the University address in Portland, where more than 700 attendees are expected. The OSU Foundation is proud to again be a sponsor of this event, which is organized by University Relations & Marketing and the OSU Alumni Association. It gives us the opportunity – as an Oregon State family – to pause, celebrate our accomplishments, and set our direction for the coming year. Among this year’s highlights will be a challenge to renew our commitment to student success, an area deans, directors and the Foundation have been working to support for the past year or so. I look forward to hearing President Ray’s charge, which will inform our work to collectively raise resources in this strategic area going forward.

As we prepare for and plan OSU’s second comprehensive fundraising campaign, we know that engagement – with alumni, parents, friends – will be a key to our success. Efforts are underway to create a volunteer management program to facilitate involvement with the university. Last week Scott Ashford, dean of engineering and holder of the Kearney Professorship in Engineering, Bob Gilmour, executive director of INTO OSU, and I spent a week in Asia, where we have more than 3,000 alumni. In addition to a number of individual meetings, corporate visits, and admissions related efforts, enthusiastic alumni came out to receptions in Shanghai and Bangkok to visit old friends, network and snap pictures with Benny. Such engaged alumni around the world help promote OSU’s reputation as a leading international public research university.

Campaign Planning

We set a goal this year to more intentionally begin planning for the next campaign. This work has been a broad exploration and includes the university’s visioning process, Strategic Plan 4.0, fundraising priority setting, staffing needs, organizational structure, and engagement metrics. Foundation leaders shared progress to date with the Foundation’s Board of Trustees in December and will make a similar presentation in February to members of the Provost’s Council and President’s Cabinet.

P.S.: OSU Foundation Email – On a final “housekeeping” note, the OSU Foundation is in the process of migrating to a new email system. During the next few weeks, all OSU Foundation email addresses are changing from the university’s “@oregonstate.edu” extension to the Foundation’s own “@osufoundation.org” extension. The .org domain reflects our distinct non-profit status.
