Patti Austin’s Homage to Ella Fitzgerald

On Saturday, April 29, OSU President's Circle members and university friends had a wonderful time enjoying each other's company at a special reception prior to a concert featuring the music of Ella Fitzgerald. The reception featured a jazz piano performance by Bryson Skaar '15. After growing up in the Valley, Skaar earned his undergraduate degree in Music, focusing on piano performance. Now, he works as a faculty instructor at OSU.

Our featured speaker was Julia Voorhies '06, the Director of Choirs at Oregon City High School. Voorhies earned her undergraduate music degree and her masters in music education from OSU. She credits the excellent instruction of Dr. Tina Bull, Emeritus Associate Professor of Music, and Dr. Steven Zielke, Director of Choral Studies, for helping her become the teacher she is today.

Voorhies and Skaar are just two examples of graduates from the thriving arts programs at Oregon State University. In fact, Oregon State University leaders recently announced plans for a new arts and education complex on the Corvallis campus. The initiative will expand and enhance the existing LaSells Stewart Center, bringing together music, theater, digital communications programs, and the visual arts to form a center of creativity infused with science and technology.

At the President's Circle reception, Kristin Watkins, Associate Vice President of Development for the OSU Foundation, spoke about the exciting new Arts and Education Complex. "For many of our students, college is the place where they have their first powerful experiences with the arts. That’s one of the reasons why we’re so excited about the new arts and education complex and the opportunities it will create."
